If you love your dog, making homemade treats is probably a no-brainer solution for giving them yummy and healthy pleasure in every bite.

Chicken jerky treats are one of the simplest healthy snacks for your fur baby that you can make at home. All you need is some chicken breasts, preferably from organic chicken to avoid antibiotics, cutting board, sharp knife, freezer and an oven or an air fryer.

Ingredients

100g Chicken breasts – boneless, skinless chicken breasts, preferably of organic origin.

We're going to slice them very thin. The easiest way to do this is by putting them in the freezer for an hour before attempting to slice them.

Instructions (Oven)

1. Rinse the chicken breasts under cold running water.

2. Place them on a disposable kitchen towel and pat them dry.

3. Take a plastic bag and put the chicken breasts in the freezer for an hour.

4. Take out the chicken breasts and put them on a cutting board.

5. Turn on the oven to 100° Celsius with the ventilation option if available.

6. You'll need 1 baking tray for this amount of meat, protect it with parchment paper.

7. Start cutting the chicken strips with a sharp knife. We want even thin slices around 3 mm thick. Cut the strips against the grain, NOT along the fibers.

8. Place chicken strips on the trays. Squeeze them together, but allow space between them.

9. Put the trays in the oven for about 2-3 hours, flipping strips halfway. To speed up the process, you can open the oven a couple of times during this process to let the moisture out. The time will depend on the thickness and evenness of the strips you've cut.

10. The jerky strips are done when the strips are a see-through orange color. No part of the chicken seems "uncooked" or moist.

(*Why do we always wash meat? Residues of industrial slaughterhouses on our meat are icky. This way we eliminate possible crushed bone pieces on the meat.)

Instructions (Air-fryer or Convection Oven)

1. Rinse the chicken breasts under cold running water.

2. Place them on a disposable kitchen towel and pat them dry.

3. Take a plastic bag and put the chicken breasts in the freezer for an hour.

4. Take out the chicken breasts and put them on a cutting board.

5. Start cutting the chicken strips with a sharp knife. We want even thin slices around 3 mm thick. Cut the strips against the grain, NOT along the fibers.

6. Take a mesh tray from the air fryer or convection oven. Grease it with spray oil. Place chicken strips on the mesh, leaving space between the pieces.

7. Place the tray in the air fryer or the convection oven and set it to 100° Celsius. Set the timer for an hour.

8. When the timer is done, flip the strips and repeat the procedure for another hour. The time will depend on the thickness and evenness of the strips you've cut.

9. The jerky strips are done when the strips are a see-through orange color. No part of the chicken seems "uncooked" or moist.

How to Store Chicken Jerky

Jerky strips are dry meats that will last for months if dried completely. That said, the only way we ever got a month out of them is when we forgot about them. Dog’s love this healthy treat so much, we run out of it in no time. Store them in airtight containers or a glass container. No need to refrigerate or freeze them.

Listen to the crunch!
